Excavation - turbine foundations and base for the crane

The picture on the left shows the excavation for one turbine base.

The picture on the right shows the final stages in building the foundations for a wind turbine. By this stage a steel frame has been completed and topped with a steel cage with the fixing bolts - seen in the centre of the picture. The foundations are then completed by pouring concrete over the steel framework. This stage is approaching completion in the picture on the right. Once started the concrete has to be poured in one continuous process. When set the concrete is covered over with compacted soil to weight it down and help to prevent the turbine toppling over. Each turbine base uses about 1000 tons of concrete and steel.
